Dido was brought into the world in 1971 in London, England. She is the daughter of a literature agent and poet (her mother writes poems as a pastime).
Dido's brother introduces her to the music world, being the vocal voice of the popular trip-hop group Faithless. At 6 she enters into the prestigious music
school Guildhall Schoolc in London. There Dido clearly manifests her gift for playing different instruments. Captivated by the music of Ella Fitzgerald at 16 she totally devotes herself to singing and starts performing in a couple of bands.
Her brother tries to discourage her, stating that she lacks music talent. However, Dido does not lose heart and stays true to her desire to go on growing as a singer. Thus, she keeps on singing in several bands that perform in different London venues by night.
It might sound paradoxical, but the one who gives her the most encouraging shoulder to become a successful singer is namely her brother. Initially he does not acknowledge his sister's talent but later reconsiders his outlook and invites Dido as a co-singer in Faithless's debut album Faithless' Reverence (1996). The album is released in over 5 million copies. This successful project of theirs leads to a 2-year collaboration, which greatly benefits Dido as a singer.
Her first album No Angel comes out in 1999 due to the assistance of her brother Rollo. The album features smash hits such as "Here With Me", "Thank You".
The rap singer Eminem is the one to actually discover Dido and introduce her to the American public in the United States, by using a sample from 'Thank You' in his hit song "Stan". Dido appears with Eminem in multiple shows such as Saturday Night Live and Late Night With Conan O'Brien, The Tonight Show with Jay Leno and The Late Late Show With Craig Kilborn, thus her popularity in America and Europe growing to a remarkable extent. |
