The exceptional comedian gift that Jim Carrey has can hardly be described
by means of words. It's just a matter of taking a short glimpse of any of
his
comedies to realize what a spontaneous outburst of energy and slapstick
performance he is able to show to the public. Born 43 years ago as James
Eugene Carr in the Toronto suburb of Newmarket, Ontario, Jim plunges into
the world of comedy at an early age, thus finding it futile having to finish
his
regular school. His work for comedy clubs takes him to Los Angeles at the
age of 17,
where he is enrolled in the The Comedy Store. His performance makes a great
impression
to comedian Rodney Dangerfield who invites Carrey to open Dangerfield's tour
performances.
His brilliant theater performances are soon followed by Jim's stepping in
front
of the TV camera to feature in the notorious Fox sketch comedy show In
Living Color as the only white male performer there. Carrey's offbeat
on-screen behavior simply captivates the American audiences and gives him a
good credit to take part in his first big-screen project where he is given
the
lead part: Ace Ventura: Pet Detective (1994), followed the same year by two
other hit releases: The Mask and Dumb and Dumber. Those comedy projects
simply make him the name of the most original comedian to ever appear on
the big screen. And the most paid one - for his role in The Cable Guy he
gets a paycheck for the cosmic twenty million dollars. At the height of his
comic career, when the successful Liar Liar (1997) is released, Jim
takes on the challenge to try his dramatic skills as well. His role in The
Truman Show (1998) is a sheer sensation, bringing him a Golden Globe Award
for Best Actor in a Drama. The following year he is deservedly honored at
the Golden Globe event again, this time for Best Actor in a Comedy/Musical.
The character of Andy Kaufman, that Carrey portrays is a complicated
mixture of comedic makings and dramatic elements. Jim's recent project -
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004) brings him a good deal of
critical acclaim. His latest performance is related to the upcoming
criminal comedy Fun with Dick and Jane, a story about a married couple that
turn to robbery to pay the bills.
