Uma Thurman Uma Karuna Thurman was born on 29 April 1970 in Boston, Massachusetts. Her father is of a Tibetan descent. The name Uma itself refers to an Indian God and means "bestower of blessings". As a child she was longish and clumsy but began taking acting lessons nevertheless. Uma decided that being an actress is her vocation and did what most beginners usually do went to New York City. While in New York, she took on various jobs in order to pay her bills. Her first role was in the movie Kiss Daddy Goodnight in 1987. Her next two movies were Johnny Be Good and The Adventures of Baron Munchausen. Her image of an erotic actress was created in Dangerous Liaisons in 1988. A trip to England followed because she didn't like much the whole celebrity thing going. Upon returning to America Uma was offered several roles including the box-office hits Henry & June, Final Analysis, Jennifer 8, Mad Dog and Glory. For the film Get The Blues, in which she plays the role of a lowlife tramp and a drug-addict, Uma won the Best Supporting Actress Oscar. Uma then starred in Gattaca, Batman & Robin, Les Miserables and The Avengers. Before Uma married Ethan Hawk and gave birth to Maya Ray, she had been married to Gary Oldman and had been engaged with Timothy Hutton and Robert De Niro.
